| | Wednesday 6th June 2012. Our train is TLK 56102 the 04.40 from Gdynia Glówny to Wroclaw Glówny. Today's journey starts at Gdynia on the Baltic coast and will run eventually to Poznan and onwards to Wroclaw. The first section, TTR156, is to Tczew where the line to Warsaw and the line to Poznan diverge. Gdynia station was opened in 1870 but was destroyed during the war. The current station dates from the 1950s. It has been totally rebuilt to improve the environment for visitors to the European football championships-Euro 2012.The run from Gdynia through the spa resort of Sopot to Gdansk is urban, busy with commuter trains even at the early hour of our start! Before we arrive at Gdansk we pass the famous shipyards where the Solidarity movement was born. Beyond Gdansk we pass near the massive LOTOS oil refinery – and some of the new and not quite so new locomotives that haul refined products away from the six million ton a year facility. The run to Tczew is over tracks that are transforming the railway into a 200kph railway suitable for the modern age. Approaching Tczew we pass the impressive, and very up to date, marshalling yard with wagons from all over Europe being shunted. A fascinating journey made in perfect weather. | | Tag cloud: cabride gydnia tczew gdynia glówny wroclaw poznan ttr156 warsaw diverge improve football championships-euro sopot gdansk urban commuter weather | Tell a friend about this publication |
