| | Switzerland is unique in Europe, as it has a single wagon rail-freight network linking every major community in the country, and important manufacturing centres. We examine this network with the help of MIGROS, one of the major supermarket chains in the country, and one of SBB Cargo's biggest customers. We follow the progress of a pallet of MIGROS TOTAL washing powder from manufacture at MIFA (MIGROS manufacturing) at Basel, through their central warehouse at Neuendorf near Olten- (which can accommodate 200 wagons!) where the washing powder is unloaded, sorted and sent on to one of twenty MIGROS delivery points – in our case to San Antonino, the regional distribution depot for Canton Ticino in the Italian part of the country. We also look at the cool-chain following frozen apricots which travel with other temperature sensitive products to Ticino. Filmed with considerable assistance from MIGROS and SBB Cargo this is a definitive study of rail freight in Switzerland.
