| | Welcome to Switzerland. Our exploration starts at Bellinzona - UNESCO town famed for its three castles. There is not much flat land in this part of Switzerland so the Ticino delta has developed into an industrial area with facilities for MIGROS, the Coop, MANOR, Holcim, and others- all are connected to the rail network. Two railways run alongside Lago Maggiore: the short run to the town of Locarno, and to Luino and Milan- this was the main line south and it is still busy with freight and the occasional passenger train. At Locarno we look at FART, a metre gauge line linking Locarno with Domodossola on the Simplon. On the mainline we visit the NEAT work site, Taverne-Torricella –to view another clutch of freight terminals, at Lugano we ride the funicular to the town centre and the FLP, Ferrovie Luganesi, to Ponte Tresa on the Italian border. On to Melide where there is a causeway across the lake and Swissminiatur, then Capolago-Riva S Vitale- the interchange with Ferrovia Monte Generoso, and Mendrisio where a new line to Italy is being built/restored, and finally to Chiasso, a slightly strange station on the Italian border.
