None of the original station buildings from 1863 remains, but there are nevertheless some survivors from the time of the opening of the District Railway in 1868, such as Gloucester Road and Bayswater. The tremendous variation in styles over the period since then is attributable not only to the passage of time but also to the different ideas and needs of the independent companies that originally comprised the Underground.
