| Castleford lies on the very edge of the concealed coalfield and the earliest coal extraction was to the west where the coal measures outcrop on the surface. These workings were served by tramroads but the opening of the York & North Midland Railway in 1840, and then subsequent lines, opened up the possibility of more substantial deep mining. As a result Castleford became a very important centre producing huge tonnages of coal for export and the domestic market. In this book the author briefly describes this history and then looks in more detail at the major collieries. These comprised Ackton Hall, Allerton Bywater, Allerton Main, Fryston, Glasshoughton, Ledston Luck, Peckfield, Prince of Wales, Savile, Wheldale and Whitwood. A fascinating read and well up to the standards associated with Martin Bairstow. Contents:
