Athel Line: A Fleet History presents the specifications and history of every ship run by this major independent tanker operator, which was associated for some of its career with Tate & Lyle. The histories of 116 vessels are examined in detail with 100 photos covering most of their ships, and ship plans and certificates illustrate the development of these major vessels across the years. As a tanker fleet which was originally designed for molasses, but which was sufficiently versatile to handle crude oil and various product cargoes, the Athel Line was an ideal model of its kind. This reference work is set to become a major source on tanker development, of importance to maritime researchers and ship enthusiasts worldwide. But it is more than just a clinical account of the tanker story. Using 160 additional photographs, personal documents and anecdotes, it offers also a sense of what it meant to have served aboard the ships of the Athel Line.
