Running for 46 miles from the main line of the Shropshire Union Canal near Nantwich, it wends its way across lovely Cheshire and Shropshire countryside, then into the spectacular Welsh mountains to a terminus on the River Dee in the Vale of Llangollen. Historically, the waterway comprises of most of the route of the original Ellesmere Canal, planned and built by such famous engineers as Thomas Telford and William Jessop. Among its outstanding engineering structures are the aqueducts at Chirk and Pontcysyllte. The latter is the premier ‘wonder' of Britain's waterways and also world-famous. Written by Harry Arnold, renowned waterway journalist and photographer. He is the author of a work on the linking Montgomery Canal. This book brings together many pictures from his extensive Waterway Images library.
