At the start of the decade, the USA was still heavily involved in Vietnam and vast numbers of military aircraft were stationed in Europe, on both sides of the Iron Curtain. By the end of the decade, the Vietnam War was over and the first stirrings of Détente were in the air. Following the oil crises, the global economy teetered on the edge of recession and many countries, such as Britain, were faced with uncomfortable questions about the size and cost of their defence establishments, which led to the gradual elimination of many older types. Despite these changes, throughout the 1970s, many classic designs were still operational around the globe and new types and variants were still being developed.
