| The Austrian capital can be proud of having one of Europe's best public transport systems. Besides the ever-growing U-Bahn network the city boasts one of the world's most extensive tramway networks, which operates a very dense timetable. The system is complemented by the Badner Bahn and the S-Bahn, so for the railway enthusiast there is a lot to explore. Besides Vienna, other tramway systems in Austria can be found in Linz, Graz, Innsbruck and Gmunden. While the latter three are conventional tramway systems, the one at Linz features a tunnel section that opened a few years ago. For this reason we have included this city in our book. This book includes anything you want to know about the history of the Vienna U-Bahn, from its origin as a steam-hauled Stadtbahn in 1898 up to the recent U1 extension to Leopoldau. Each metro station is illustrated with several colour photographs. Special chapters are dedicated to the tram system (focussing on the underground tram stops), the Badner Bahn and the S-Bahn.
