| During the 1950s and 1960s Tony Burges travelled widely throughout the British Isles recording the changing railway scene. His photographic collection, the vast bulk of which has never been published before, migrated with him when he moved to Canada. In his first book for Ian Allan Publishing, he has selected some 175 images recording the changing railway scene in Hampshire in the years when steam was gradually being replaced by diesel and electric traction. Covering main lines, secondary routes and branch lines, the photographs provide the reader with a wonderful record of the railways of the county during these significant years. Alongside the photographs, the author's detailed captions provide much of interest for both the railway enthusiast and the local historian. Since its launch in November 2003, the ‘British Railway Pictorial' series has proved highly popular. This latest title will be of great interest to residents of Hampshire and those countless thousands who travelled to the county during the final years of Southern Region steam to see the country's last steamoperated express services.
