The story starts in an electrical factory in Barnet, North London, where a Mr. Claude Lane was making electric Vehicles, like milk floats. He built a very large model tram there and soon took it around to fairs and amusement parks. With a second tram he took them and the track etc. to Rhyl in North Wales and to Hastings during summer seasons. They proved to be very popular and a permanent tramway was set up at Eastbourne, Sussex. This opened in 1954 and extended in 1955-8. Most of the tramcars now in use were built there. The next move was to its present home – at Seaton. There the tramway has operated for over 20 years. This video recording starts with scenes at Hastings then moves onto the Eastbourne times. Through films provided by Ken Thorpe they story of the construction and developments of the tramway is told, track building – bridge repairing – and all the other slogging jobs that volunteers and staff had to perform.
