He immediately set about the task of providing a large express passenger locomotive capable of taking on the company's rivals the L.N.E.R. Eighteen months later 'Pacific' 6200 The Princess Roya1 was completed at Crewe. By the end of 1935, 6200 had been joined by eleven sister engines and the experimental 6202 'Turbomotive'. By now the LNER had started to introduce its celebrated A4s the LMS responded with the Coronations. The first of these, 6220 Coronation, carried full streamlining another 24 followed with an additional 14 built without the streamlined casing. As nationalisation came and went Stanier's 'Pacifics' worked relentlessly up and down the West Coast Main Line. However as modemisation began during the late 1950s the duties began to dwindle and by November 1962 all the 'Princesses' had been withdrawn and the final 'Coronation' went two years later. Thankfully five 'Pacifics' made it into preservation to keep the memory alive. This programme takes a look back at Staniefs' Pacifics from the 1930s to the present day and is a comprehensive record of these powerful locomotives.
