The standard steam locomotives introdcued by British Railways in 195 represented the ultimate development of the steam locomotive in great britain. Their design was greatly influenced by the need to meet the economic conditions of the postwar era and was succesful in doing so. Never before had a whole range of locomotives been produced to meet every operating requirement. Unfortunatly this worthwhile project was shortlived, being overtaken by the forces of economics and politics. The last new standard engine was built in 1960 and the use of steam power ceased on BR in 1968. Nevertheless, the BR standard engines were a major feature of the steam era on British Railways, as were the 'Austerity' heavy goods engines built during the second world war. Like the BR standards, the 'Austerities' were produced under the direction of R.A. Riddles. They were built to work in war conditions all over the British Railway system and on the continent of Europe. As were the american 'S160' class also. Although several excellent books have been produced about them, they have not been covered before in a book such as this. As well as intersting drawings hitherto unpublished, this book contains a careful selection of photographs of all the british railways standard classes, of the war department heavy goods engines and of the US army 'S160' class. It is a companion volume to A Pictorial Record of British Railways Standard Steam Locomotives published in 1982, and provides additional, much more than comprehensive coverage than was possible in that orignal single volume.
