| The peak of the post-war Railway summers came in 1957 when an unbelievable volume of traffic travelled by train to and from Britain's principal holiday resorts. Amongst the most popular of the resorts were those in the Torbay area where on Summer Saturdays the normally adequate train service between Newton Abbot and Kingswear was swollen to such proportions that for much of the day the modest facilities of the line were in continuous danger of being overwhelmed. To add to the operational difficulties, none of the stations had more than two platforms whilst half the running had to be made over single line. The logistics were staggering. On an ordinary weekday 47 trains hauling 234 coaches left Newton Abbot for Paignton and Kingswear while on Saturdays this increased to no less than 67 trains conveying 514 vehicles. The organisation underpinning these figures is a story that needs to be told. OPERATlON TORBAY deals not only with the Weekday and Summer Saturdays service but shows the formation and working details of every single vehicle that used the line: the type of coach, where they came from and what they did next. The Working Timetable is included together with a hundred and one details about the train and traffic workings, carriage workings and stabling arrangements - everything to several places of decimals!
