| | Following on from those on Tyne-Tees-Mersey and Associated Motorways, this is the third book by author Keith Healey on coaching pools. Pooling the resources of several operators to provide a service is nothing new in the road passenger transport industry and can be traced back to the time of the stage coaches. The latter were killed off by the new railways, which in turn were threatened by competition from road vehicles following the introduction of the internal combustion engine. From an early date motor-coach operators were not slow to see the advantages of forming a pool for express services from Yorkshire to London and to Blackpool. Somewhat later there was also the Yorkshire to Torbay Pool catering for summer holiday traffic. Keith Healey has written a meticulously researched, comprehensive and entertaining account of these activities, copiously illustrated including many pictures taken by the legendary G H F Atkins. This book fills a long-felt gap in the literature on long-distance coaching in Great Britain.
