Welcome to this first edition of German Railways Part 2, which covers private railways and operators, preserved locomotives and museums. The changes in Germany in recent years mean that today almost anywhere on the DB Network it is possible to find privately owned locomotives working trains over the main lines. This book is designed to help you identify those locomotives and the railways to which they belong. The starting point has been those railways listed as belonging to the Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV) and enlarged to include others that the authors consider of interest (e.g. track contractors). Because some of the preserved railway operators have become fully fledged operators (having a safety case etc) it has been decided to include all the museums and museum lines in this book as well as the lists of preserved locomotives. These lists have been expanded to include private lines' locomotives. The format of the private railway section is different to that of the DB book. Only summary details of locomotives are shown but these details include the works numbers - often vital in identifying locomotives that have changed owners several times. The compiling of this book has been difficult with changes taking place each week. The task started in 2000 but the period since then has been one of continuous change! The data is basically up to date to the end of 2003 with a few 2004 items added. Any errors or omissions should be brought to the notice of the authors who hope there are not too many! (As the book went into the final production stage several private operators became insolvent. They are still listed in this book as they have been part of the scene for the last few years and readers might like to have a record of their stock). It is hoped that this book will answer many questions about the private lines and their locations and encourage more journeys off the beaten track in Germany.
