| | For a short time in the mid-1920s, Belfast was at the forefront of the development of civil air transport in the British Isles. Spurred on by successful commercial flights to the RAF airfield at Aldergrove in 1921-23, and in a far-sighted and adventurous move, Belfast City Council established the first municipal aerodrome in the United Kingdom - at Malone, within the city boundary. A fledgling air company, Northern Airlines, was encouraged to set up services to Liverpool, Glasgow, Carlisle and Stranraer. This book is a tribute to the pioneers and innovators whose names deserve to be remembered and a commemoration of a bold effort that played its part in paving the way for the global commercial aviation network that exists today.
