This is the eagerly awaited companion to the same team's Buses in the Sixties. Whereas that decade was one of relative stability and order, the seventies were to see the road passenger transport industry in Great Britain stood on its head. Apart from the demise of the traditional front-engined bus chassis and its replacement by the rear-engined designs that have become so familiar, the make-up of the industry itself changed out of all recognition. The sixties had been the last decade in which there was a clear-cut distinction among the municipalities, the company operators - BET and Tilling - and the independents. The National Bus Company was formed on 1st January 1969, effectively as successor to BET and Tilling, and by the mid 1970s its effects were being felt in every corner of the land. The PTEs did much the same thing for the conurbations and many municipal fleets lost their identity. Geoffrey Atkins recorded much of what was happening on colour film and this volume presents the best of his work from not only his native Nottingham and environs, but also much of the rest of the country, including from Brighton via London, Birmingham and Leicester to Scotland, and from Llandudno to Skegness taking in Manchester, Bradford and Sheffield on the way. John Banks has once again provided text and captions and the book gives a unique record of the changes that the seventies brought.
