Venture's “Classic Leylands 1' published in September 2001 looked at buses and coaches produced by the Lancashire manufacturer in the 15 years up to the outbreak of the Second World War. Many of those vehicles worked hard through the six years of war and many survived to run in the postwar period. It was not unknown for early 1930s and even late1920s vehicles to survive in service into the 1960s. At the beginning of the war Leyland provided hard-pressed operators with a number of what became known as the 'unfrozen' chassis - those built up from parts in stock before the emergency - and when hostilities ceased was in the forefront of the new battle - against austerity rationing and general shortages - to 'export or die'. The new postwar models were the PS and PD ranges of Tiger single-deckers and Titan double-deckers which were immediately popular with operators throughout the United Kingdom and the World. Leyland's order book was full and the PS/PD ranges proliferated until replaced by underfloor-engined single-deckers and the Atlantean rear-engined double-decker. 'Classic Leylands 2' again written by John Banks looks at what was happening on the streets of towns and cities as well as in remoter districts in the war years and approximately the first two decades of peace as the industry and the country struggled to find their feet again. Using a magnificently varied selection of over 200 photographs for the most part not previously published and including many gems from the G H F Atkins and Senior Transport Archive collections the author brings together the survivors from the prewar period and the new postwar designs to complete the survey of Leyland up to the phasing out of the traditional forward-engined double-deck Titan in the 1960s.'
