| | 40 years ago Manchester's streets were full of buses of all colours and makes as the various local authorities' vehicles joined those of the territorial companies - Tilling and BET - and the independents to carry their passengers on journeys far and near. Civic pride was reflected in the turnout of the various local municipal vehicles as they seemed to try and out do each other in standards of appearance. As passenger numbers declined the need to make econiomies could be seen in the gradually declining srtandards in many fleets, and once proud liveries became simplified and neglected. Car usage increased and congestion became a serious threat to the region's economy. In 1969 SELNEC came into being to take over all the local municipal fleets and to coordinate matters with British Rail and the then newly formed National Bus company. A change of bus types and colours followed which remained substantially unchanged until the mid-eighties when deregulation of the bus industry, followed by privatisation, brought a host of new companies onto the streets with buses of all sizes ages and colours. The colour album looks at the changes and brings back memories to those who still remember the 50's whilst giving the modern enthusiast a glimpse back into that earlier world.
