| | The two railways involved in this story, the Great Western and the London, Midland and Scottish, were as alike as chalk and cheese in their make-up and approach to motive power considerations for some years after the Grouping in 1923. This aspect was, however, drastically amended once Stanier had moved to Euston from Swindon and began his huge programme of replacing the largely outmoded and obsolescent designs then struggling to maintain a satisfactory service. During the early years of Stanier's reign over 1,200 locomotives were produced to his designs to bring the fleet up-to-date and fully capable of meeting the extreme demands of wartime usage from 1939 onwards. Considering that he only started on the LMS in 1932, the amount of progress made in this huge restocking programme in the 5½ years available was prodigious, indicating a competent engineer and organiser at work. There were, initially, some minor disappointments but he amended his philosophy accordingly to bring about some of the most successful express, mixed traffic and freight engines to grace British rails, some of which were still in quantity production during early Nationalisation days.
