| VHS Cassette (also available as DVD-R Video). Today we are used to hearing such names as Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Rupert Murdoch and the like. Earlier in the 20th Century, Great Britain in particular had more than its fair share of business visionaries. Many were drawn to the opportunities available in shipping and associated activities at a time when the UK controlled over half the world's merchant fleet. Men & families such as the Cayzer's, Holts, Owen Phillips, John Ellerman, James Mackay, Christopher Furness and others. So started the Furness Withy Group, growing from a small concern in Hartlepool, into one of the world's leading ship operators. These men and their business' were to be joined in due course by a new generation of entrepeneurs. In their tum these men took decisions some of which are still influencing events today. Furness Withy had substantial interests in shipyards, iron & steel works and coal mines as well as a vast shipping empire with interests in such famous companies as Shaw Savill, Royal Mail, Pacific Steam Navigation and Cairn Line. In this video we sail with some of the ships that flew the Furness Withy colours, including the'Queen of Bermuda' and her sister the'Monarch of Bermuda'. When designed and built, these ships were amongst the most luxurious and technically advanced in the world. They were superior to most and equal to any of the great transatlantic liners of the day and yet until now, their story has been seldom told. Now, with the help of very rare archive film, their story can be told and we can see for ourselvesjust what it was like to have sailed aboard these magnificent liners & just what it was that made them so very special.
