| | London's status as Capital city and Great Britain's largest conurbation ensured it's unrivalled position as a railway centre from the earliest days, and it became a Mecca for steam enthusiasts. Most of the country's principal routes radiated from the Capital and these carried famous, crack express trains such as the 'Flying Scotsman', 'Caledonian' and the all-Pullman 'Bournemouth Belle'. Locomotives rostered for these prestigious workings were especially groomed and embeltished with distinctive headboards. London also had a dense network of steam-operated suburban routes which carried thousands of citizens to and from work in the City. Equally important were the Capital's freight arteries which were vital to the economic life of the region. Contents:
