| | The handful of pages in the public timetable devoted to the southern half of the Great Central did less than justice to the system and belied one of the busiest and most interesting railways in the country. At the southern end of the section one could one find steam services and high density underground workings sharing the same ten-mile section of line and engine-changing being carried out as a matter of hourly routine in a mere three minutes - the fastest in the country. At the northern end of the district an unbelievably dense volume of goods and mineral trains kept the line so busy that paths for passenger trains hardly existed. This description of the Great Central during the 1950's (and written by a team who worked on the system at the time) is not just a tale of another railway - it is a detailed description of a service that was, in every sense, extraordinary.
