| | Opened in 1894 the West Highland line linked Glasgow and Fort William, a journey of over 100 miles through previously unconquered scenery past lochs and over the wild Rannoch Moor. In 1994 the line celebrated its centenary with a series of special steam hauled trains. This programme covers 100 years of service and is illustrated with archive footage of the last days of steam in the 1960s, behind the scenes footage of the railway at work today and spectacular lineside action of the return of steam locomotives to Fort William and Mallaig from the 1980s. Doubleheaded steam on the West Highland Mainline and the Mallaig extension during the centenary year brings the programme to a dramatic conclusion. This programme also includes everyday workings in centenary year and spectacular footage of the 'K1' and 'K4' doubleheading from Glasgow to Fort William and to Mallaig (lineside and helicopter footage feature).
