| | A definitive history of this extensive private railway. Wemyss Estate's developed this railway to allow it to exploit the considerable coal deposits on its land. Massive investment was made to gain Fife's mineral wealth, this including major development of Fife ports. Coal became such an important factor in the prosperity in this part of Fife that is impossible to tell the story without looking at the wider implications for the area's social history. The system was Nationalised and incorporated into the National Coal Board. Today coal mining in Fife has not ceased but it is a shadow of its former self as the major single employer. A chapter on the Wemyss & Buckhaven Railway by Alan Simpson has also been included. Contents:
